Thanksgiving Day of 1984 stands out in my memory as one of the most memorable times in the kitchen with my mom—as well as the saddest. My grandma, Mom’s mom, died early that morning. I was pregnant with my first daughter, the first grandchild, and first great-grandchild—one that Grandma would never get to hold.

With heavy hearts and lots of tears, we made funeral arrangements, received phone calls from relatives, and made airline arrangements to get my brother home from the mountains of Colorado. We managed to make Thanksgiving dinner, reminiscing about Grandma. We even purposely burned the marshmallows on the sweet potatoes just like Grandma always did—although I don’t think Grandma burned them on purpose. It just happened!

Since then, whoever makes the sweet potato casserole still burns the marshmallows in memory of Grandma.

Eight years later, Grandpa died on the exact same day. I cooked Thanksgiving dinner for fifty-five people at my house the day after his funeral as all the relatives were still here. The skills in organization I learned from Mom in 1984 stayed with me, and I had dinner ready at noon for everyone and plenty of leftovers for supper that night. Mom taught me how to be organized in getting a big dinner on the table in spite of all the distractions.
